Abstract
In his review of The Last Elephants (2019) by Don Pinnock & Colin Bell, Andrew Rowan highlights the book’s urgent warning about Africa’s rapidly declining elephant populations, drawing on data from the 2016 Great Elephant Census that revealed only 380,000 savannah elephants remaining, with poaching killing one every 15–20 minutes. Against a backdrop of soaring human population growth, the book blends striking photography with powerful personal accounts to document both the crisis and the courageous efforts to save elephants. While projecting a potential drop to just 105,000 elephants by 2050, it also offers hope through success stories in conservation, shared landscapes, and policy advocacy, making it both a sobering exposé and a compelling call to action.
