Abstract

As countries become wealthier, rising incomes drive greater consumption of meat and other animal products while encouraging a transition from extensive livestock production to intensive farming systems. Although agricultural innovation has improved land-use efficiency and reduced pressure on forests in many regions, concerns persist about animal welfare, aquaculture and the environmental impact of pet food production. Consumer demand, corporate commitments and technological advances—including cage-free housing, in ovo sexing and alternative proteins—are gradually reducing some forms of animal suffering and may ultimately reshape the future of animal agriculture.
