Abstract

The development of legislation in Great Britain covering zoos is described. In 1945, there were only 14 zoos in Great Britain. By 1971, there were over 100 captive animal facilities in the country, but no legislation governed their activities. After a decade of lobbying, the Zoo Licensing Act was passed by Parliament on July 27, 1981.
