Contributors to this discussion acknowledge ambiguities in the terms used, including ‘feelings’, ‘behavior’, ‘cognition’ and ‘sentience’ itself. Yet they continue to use such words without reference to scientific criteria established by experimental psychology.

David Booth holds the research position of Honorary Professor in the School of Psychology, University of Sussex. He studies the workings of individuals’ lives in their usual surroundings, including mechanisms of human and rodent food intake and of human cooperation. Website
