Abstract
Animal sentience—the capacity to experience feelings such as pain, distress, comfort, and pleasure—is increasingly explored through scientific evidence. This article introduces the concept, considers how researchers investigate experiences animals cannot describe, and invites readers to look more closely at the many ways animals may experience the world.
